Microsoft Office for iOS Gets Detailed

Microsoft does plan to release Office for the iPhone and iPad in early 2013, according to new details posted online by The Verge.

Office Mobile will debut in the form of free apps that allow Android and iOS users to view Microsoft Office documents on the move. Like the existing SkyDrive and OneNote apps, Office Mobile will require a Microsoft account. On first launch, a Microsoft account will provide access to the basic viewing functionality in the apps. Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents will all be supported, and edit functionality can be enabled with an Office 365 subscription.

Microsoft will allow iOS users to purchase an Office 365 subscription within the app, or let organizations distribute codes to enable Office Mobile editing for users. The apps will allow for basic editing, but we’re told this won’t go very far in attempting to replace regular full use of a desktop Office version.

Office Mobile for iOS is said to arrive in late February or early March. The Android version is expected in May.

When the site asked Microsoft to comment about the story, the company said, “Office will work across Windows Phone, iOS and Android.”

Google Says It’s Matched App Store With 700,000 Apps

Google has reportedly matched Apple with over 700,000 applications available for its Android devices, according to Bloomberg.

Google Inc. said there are about 700,000 applications available for downloading onto mobile devices that run the Android operating system, challenging Apple Inc. lead in the race for software tools.

That means Google has matched Apple in the number of games, productivity tools and other programs that are usable on handheld electronics, including tablets and smartphones. Apple said last week that its App Store has more than 700,000 apps.

Google Announces Nexus 4 Smartphone, Nexus 10 Tablet

Google has just announced a new Nexus 4 smartphone by LG , a new Nexus 7 with HSPA+, and a Nexus 10 tablet by Samsung.

Nexus 7: Thin, light and now even more portable
Nexus 7 brings you the best of Google–YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, Maps–and all the great content from Google Play in a slim, portable package that fits perfectly in your hand. To give you more room for all that great content you can now get Nexus 7 with 16GB ($199) or 32GB ($249) of storage. But we also wanted to make this highly portable tablet even more mobile. Google Play: More entertainment, more countries

On November 13, we’re bringing music on Google Play to Europe. Those of you in the U.K, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will be able to purchase music from the Google Play store and add up to 20,000 songs—for free—from your existing collection to the cloud for streaming to your Android devices or web browser. We’re also launching our new matching feature to streamline the process of uploading your personal music to Google Play. Google’s First 10-Inch Tablet by Samsung Leaked

A photo of Google’s first 10-inch tablet made by Samsung has surfaced online.

BriefMobile is proud to release the first pictures of Google’s Nexus 10 tablet by Samsung. The device, manufactured by the popular Korean OEM, features the latest version of Google’s Android operating system— Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Yes, it’s still called “Jelly Bean.” There’s no “Key Lime Pie” yet.

Google is expected to announce the tablet on Monday, October 29th, in New York City.

Low Light Shootout: iPhone 5 vs. Lumia 920 vs. One X vs. Galaxy S III

The iPhone 5, Lumia 920, Nokia 808, HTC One X and Galaxy S III go head to head in an Engadget low light shootout.

It looks like Nokia’s controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to “simulate” low-light shooting, was even less necessary that the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company’s Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with the Lumia 920 and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux — a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn’t fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.
